A couple of months back on the "Silver Cornet" post, I asked members if anyone was still reading here. Would you believe I'm still getting comments on that post? Well, I am, most recently just a couple of days ago. A kind anon replied: "Yes! I'm new, and I'm HERE! Love this place! Don't ever quit. 😄" It was sweet, it cheered me up, and it reminded me that I hadn't posted a new story for awhile. It also made me realize how lucky I am to have a community like this, especially now, with the fandom being so dispersed and so comparatively small. Thank you, everyone. You guys are the best. ♥

Perusing the nomination post, I spotted the request from BonesLenka for fill-in fic for the period between IWTB and season 10. "Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys" is the fic I recommended to her back in February. It's an AU, but then thanks to the genius of Chris Carter, all nine previous seasons of the series are now AU. Like leiascully's "Visitor," this fic explores the relationship fallout resulting from Scully giving William up for adoption. As always, prufrock's love writes an exceptionally appealing Fox Mulder, complete with all of his charms and all of his character flaws. I enjoyed reading it very much. I hope you do, too.

Title: Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys
Author: prufrock's love
Email: prufrockslove@yahoo.com
Rating: R
Classification: Novel, MSR, Other
Summary: More than a decade had passed. Mulder had no reason to hole up in his apartment alone, wearing a Three Dog Night T-shirt with dried mustard on the hem and blue jeans that had seen better days. He wasn't "saving himself" for anyone. Especially not Her. Though she remained epically, beautifully, brilliantly kick-A-S-S.
Spoilers: We veer AU after season 7, with a few bits from 8 & 9.

Send feedback to the author, then come back and tell us what you think of "Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys." Don't forget, the nomination post is always open to your suggestions.

My heart leapt when I saw the author name Prufrock's Love. I can't recall if I've read this one before. It doesn't ring a bell. I'm glad I was able to put it on my Nook to take around with me! I need a good novel length XF story. It's been far too long. And I NEED to escape from reality right now.

Thanks for the rec! I look forward to discussion when we've all read it.

ETA: I was able to read the first chapter and I love it already!

Thank you so much for this rec. I'd never have found this exceptional story on my own. I've been reading and rereading some of the classics but have no idea where to find newer stories.

I was riveted by this story, heartbroken for Mulder and cheering for his chance for a "normal" life. I could not guess how it was going to end and was delighted with the way it did. Superb.

Thanks again for the rec. Where can I find more by this author?

wait, are you saying Syntax6 has posted 2 stories to Fanfiction.net that she DIDN'T post to her own website??? I've been allowing myself to read her longer stories only sparingly, saving them up if you will, and would love to see more. And of course I need to read Scavenger, whenever/however I can (when does it come out??)...

So if I search Gossamer or AO3 is there anything posted there under those other names, or is it only at FF.net, or? Sorry, and thanks!

If that updated 22 chapter fic is "This is How the World Ends" by Solia, it is freaking fantastic. She took about a month off but has gotten back onto it and it's easily my favorite season 10 AU yet.

Such a great way of dealing with messy canon

Just finished reading this story for the second time when I saw it here (I'm a lurker, bu t your links are great. Prufrock captured Mulder’s personality without glossing over his flaws (and strengths). Mulder is a it of a selfish *ahem* at times in the series, and seeing him written as a saint in fics is a huge turn-off. Refreshing to see him portrayed with such real humanity-being lazy about getting out, thinking about sex and trying to justify getting involved in his son's life.
The character of Mason “William” Allen was beautifully developed and really made a believable early teenager that could easily be the spawn of Mulder and Scully. He smells, he's immature and wants that happy ending and he's still a scared kid, just a really smart and x_files worthy superpowered kid.
The best part of reading the story for me was that it has a well developed plot and concept of how the story would unfold; I found myself thinking, “Yes, Scully could make the sacrifice, and yes, Mulder wouldn’t have understood initially and lost his marbles (though that was a bit of a stretch). The events unfold in a logical but unexpected manner and the escapes were beautifully hair-raising. I appreciate that the author stuck as much to canon as sanity would allow (I could only watch “William” once and it was so out of Scully’s character that I never watched the episodes after it save the very last of S9).
In conclusion, I like the way Prufrock handled the William story arc more deftly than the way Chris Carter handled it: it is much more emotionally fulfilling in that it gives more closure and hope for their relationship/partnership. Mulder ends up seeing a progression instead of "more of the same" in the mini season 10 Fox aired.

I would be happy to be added to the membership list-sign me on! I drifted away from LJ for a few years, but the X-Files reboot brought me here in my search for *quality* fanfic. I'm a complete snob for good writing, but if you can tolerate that I will dissect fanfic to as meta a level as we can take it. All writing is basically a retelling of themes that have existed since the dawn of humanity, thus fanfic is no different from the translations and iterations of Dante or Bronte. Let's go there y'all!

This is my second time reading through this story, and I think it might be my favorite of Pru's, of which I've read (I think) most of or all. I sped through this one again in one day.

I love that I equally hate and love Mulder at the same time through the majority of this fic (kind of the way he feels about Scully, I guess). While I empathize with him the whole way through I also want to smack him for being such an a-hole, too. But that's who Mulder is, even to those he loves.

I enjoy his and Mason's relationship from the beginning, as well. Mason is maybe a little too smart and too quick to catch on, but it's fairly believable, being that he is the spawn of Mulder and Scully and also growing up in the computer saavy age we have now.

I like that Mason plays matchmaker more with Mulder and Scully than Mulder and Mera.

I like that when something freakin' crazy happens, like a shootout at an airport crawling with people that don't die, that something of consequence actually happens within the FBI and they actually take action for once. That's more than a little refreshing.

The one part of this fic that frustrates me is that for someone as kick-A-S-S as Scully is - and she sure does show it in all the action scenes in this fic - she's remarkably docile with Mulder treating her like complete crap, and I'm not talking about the crazy hot (in my opinion) initial sex scene either. I thought the build up was great, the scene itself was great, and the fallout from that frustrated the crap out of me. I feel like she would have a few more choice words for the way Mulder behaves in the majority of this story.

That being said, most of season 8 Scully and beyond in canon IS this person (a huge reason I don't like the later seasons of the show). And even in the earlier seasons, we know that Scully will pretty much always drop what she's doing and come to Mulder if she thinks he's in trouble. Not only that, in the show she bares immense guilt over the decision she made on both their behalves. So maybe to that extent, I'm okay with her acceptance of his treatment.

What I DO like that counters this within this particular fic is that Prufrock at least addresses what many forget in AU/post show fic. Scully DID tell Mulder to leave, did essentially make him feel that he was putting her and William in danger by staying. But I love that Prufrock addresses that while she did this, Mulder also made the decision to stay away. It doesn't really seem he put up much of a fight.

So with all that said, I love this fic. This isn't going to be the last time I read it and now I have to feel the time suck of going back and reading all that is Pru, but I'm super glad it was posted because I'd forgotten about it. Thanks for the read, and I'm glad I finally got the time to post something that hopefully contributes to the community discussion!

I have a real soft spot for any fic which ventures into Mulder-as-a-dad territory. Doesn't really matter who the kid is; I just like Mulder in that role, and am predisposed to like any fic which explores that. I also happen to really like the way prufrock’s love writes Mulder. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what I like so much about her Mulder, but I think it has a lot to do with the fact that he's flawed but still a hero in the end, that he loves too much and hangs on too hard and hurts and fails and gets up and keeps going, that he's smart and snarky and obsessive and makes bad choices sometimes and has a dark streak that surfaces from time to time and is a hopeless romantic… In short, he's very human. You don't always agree with the decisions that he makes, but because you get such a good look inside his head, you understand why he does what he does.

I also really liked Mason/William. He's believably a smart, quirky thirteen-year-old kid, and I love the dynamics of his relationship with Mulder. I do question the legitimacy of attributing his various character traits and mannerisms to genetics, but I'll grant that the way he's written here, you can very obviously see bits of Mulder and Scully in him. I'm not convinced he would actually have grown up to have so many of their traits, since family environment plays a rather large role in such things, but then again, his adoptive dad also believed in UFOs and the paranormal, and his adoptive mom was very down to earth, so maybe the combination of nature and nurture really would have worked out like that. And maybe Mulder's just attributing it to genetics because he sees what he wants to see and draws the conclusions that let him believe that some part of him and of Scully lives on in their kid…

Although I really liked this fic overall, one thing that bothered me was how Scully was portrayed at times. Now, granted, we never get to see things from her perspective or see inside her head, so it's hard to know quite how the author was envisioning things on Scully's part, but I do feel like prufrock's love doesn't always treat Scully with quite the same care or consideration that she does Mulder. Sure, Scully's badass in this, but I feel like she's lacking the depth of characterization, the agency, and the humanity that Mulder, Mason, and even Mera (to a degree) are given.

One last point in favor of this fic - it takes the super-soldier storyline and at least does something mildly interesting with it in having Mason be able to disintegrate them. If I'm being honest, I thought the super-soldiers were one of the stupidest turns the show's mytharc took, and I was reminded in reading this fic of one reason for that: they're basically unstoppable and you can't really fight them, you just have to run. Which works well momentarily as a plot line, but you can't keep doing that forever. Giving Mason some sort of power over them (even if it's never really explained or even explored) at least allows for the possibility that the super-soldiers can be defeated, which gives the story a little bit more closure on that front than the show ever managed.

loved this!

Oh wow, I loved this. LOVED this. So well written, so engaging! Don't usually love Mulder POV stories, since I'm a diehard Scullyist, but this was so good, and captured him through and through (asshole behavior and all). I think this is the only kind of WillFic I can read, complex, challenging, and tied into mytharc to keep the tension (although Fathoms Five does great with that and it ties to canon but not mytharc).

I did have some frustration with trying to follow exactly what was going on with the decisions being made towards the end there. **SPOILER ALERT**

Did anyone else follow more closely that I did? How is it that Mulder suddenly decided to NOT go with Mason/Will and Mera across the country to keep them safe? What changed that plan exactly? What happened in the fancy hotel when he suddenly says "change of plan" did anyone know? Sorry, feeling stupid a bit on this, can't tell if its because I read it craaaazy late at night during stolen hours, or if it was just written a little confusingly. I think that was about my only issue with this fic though. Others have noted the overly passive Scully, but honestly she doesn't seem passive to me so much as heartbroken, guilt-ridden, and incredibly conflicted. Given the circumstances, I imagine I'd be a wreck too, plus of course we aren't getting into her POV at all, and Mulder will assume what he assumes...

It took me over a month to read this, but I'm glad I took the time to savor it in short bursts. This is my favorite fic by this author and I'll have to double back and send feedback.

Mulder and Mason's relationship grew realistically and I'm glad that the fic explicitly acknowledges that Mason sees his adoptive parents as his parents, and while Mulder may struggle with that at first, he accepts it and finds a way to be involved in his life. (I've read a lot of "Mulder and/or Scully reunite with William fics" where either William accepts them as his parents right away, or there's a lot of melodrama as opposed to realistic ambivalence/angst that they couldn't raise their son. This fic struck the perfect balance for me, especially with small details like Mason correcting Scully when she calls him "William.")

I loved Mason as a character, and the way he's fleshed out with little details like how he can't help but show off his telekinesis to "Mullins" and he steals Playboys. His mother Mera was sympathetic and had a backbone, and I'm glad she made it through.

I enjoyed the early plot and build-up, but found my eyes crossing a bit once I got to the action, because my eyes glazed over any time super-soldiers showed up in the show. I think the author did the best they could with the weak material S9 gave us. I think [livejournal.com profile] keslei puts it best when they say that while the super-soldiers are still cringey, showing that they can be defeated makes them a little less so, and the final battle with Mason defeating the soldiers was hard-earned and tense.

Overall, glad I read it!
