I have to say Detour is an episode I enjoyed much more when it was new and I was younger. I rewatched this at the beginning of June actually, mostly to double check on things because a scene in a fic I'm writing deals with this episode a little.
Detour isn't a bad episode. The dialogue is dry and in some scenes feels incomplete or badly edited (for example, the scene where Scully is trying to wax existential and GA delivers the line well about "...trying to give it meaning" and then the next line of Mulder's is about losing hair? Really? I hope that was an editing restriction because if they go from Wilma and Betty to terminal cancer to baldness, I have a problem).
I remember a long time ago seeing some behind the scenes interview where the crew were complaining about the rain and it interrupting the continuity in this episode and you can tell and that detracts a little. But, I do like any episode where Scully pulls her gun and shoots somebody/something, so this ep has that at least! And it has Scully singing. And it has Scully packing Mulder's things, which feels nicely conjugal for a season five episode.
As for the fics that were rec'd I have to say "This Her Fever" is the only one I've read. I read it for the first time this April. It was quite good. I think the author, Aloysia Virgata kept everybody in character, perhaps to a larger degree than the show's actual writers in the post Redux world. So far, everything I've read by Aloysia Virgata I have liked.

This rewatch was fun!
