Nomination post

Is there a story that you would like to discuss? Do you want to talk about some of the classics of the genre, like "Iolokus" or "Parabiosis"? Do you want to pick shorter stories, so that we can fit in more variety? Do you like casefiles? Character studies? The possibilities are endless.

Nominate your choices here, and support the nominations for other stories that interest you. Once we have a few suggestions, I'll try to draw up a schedule that suits everyone.

Oh yay! In the last month I've started a project of my own to read through Chronicle X (http://web.archive.org/web/20001205150800/chroniclex.simplenet.com/story.htm), and I was tired of having no one to discuss the fics with. I'm so happy to find this community!

Okay, well, I've read 2 novel length fics lately which blew me away - Arizona Highways (http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Shuttle/8642/fiction/azway/azind.htm) by Fialka, and Alluring Indiscretion (http://www.annex-files.com/annex/annex/stories/analluringindiscretion.txt) by beduini. But they're both very long (Arizona Highways especially), so that may be too hard for most people.

For perhaps some more manageable reads, I recently loved Syncopation (http://nandamai.net/fic/?p=66) by Lilla Vaughan AKA [livejournal.com profile] nandamai. Also 99 and 44/100ths Percent Done (http://krycek.gossamer.org/display.php?99PercentDone.Segretti) by Sarah Segretti (though I see you've already done one by her), and Adagio (http://krycek.gossamer.org/display.php?Adagio.Terma99) by Terma99. I've got others, but I don't want to spam with everything I've enjoyed lately. *L*

Also, I'm head-over-heels MSR and that's pretty much exclusively what I read, so sorry that these are all in that genre. Regardless, yay for fic and fic-discussing communities!

I guess if I had to pick just one, it'd be Arizona Highways, even though it's the longest, because I think it's the most discussable (not a word, *L*).

Happy Fic

I stalk again with my endless refrain of "happy fic!"

I had forgotten that you were the person who recced Arizona Highways. I would not categorize it as happy fic. It was a serious casefile, a masterpiece, and the best, well, you read all the crap I said about it. So, the angst is okay with you as long as you get your happy ending. I get the picture now. The funny thing is, I can easily imagine that novel ending very differently, and I would still have loved it. Without that ending, you wouldn't even have recced it, I bet. Well, I am not reading for the MSR happy endings. You probably figured that out already, huh? I hope you are having fun here anyway. And Bridge is a good recommendation.

*LOL* Did you see my comments in Dasha's post on the subject? hehe. It's been something I've been pondering a lot lately, how to classify my "genre" of fic. And I think it is a strange mixture. Because yes, I fall for your stereotypical MSR happy ending. But my favorite fics are ones where you have to go through some heavy angst to get there (thus, my adoration of
Arizona Highways
).

I appreciate that we all have different preferences, and I know mine is...limited. ;) I do love coming here and discussing all the good fic, because regardless of whether it is my "type" or not, it is all quality stuff.

I don't know that I did see your comments at [livejournal.com profile] dashafic. I will go check them out tomorrow. Tonight, I am going to bed. I am glad you are enjoying the discussions here. We are supposed to be having fun, right?

Yet another rec

[identity profile] memento1.livejournal.com 2008-07-10 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, so, I'm still a few weeks behind here, and terribly behind on my ChronX read-through, but I took a break to re-read the fandom classics 12 Rites of Passage and 12 Degrees of Separation by Anne Haynes (http://web.archive.org/web/20001110222500/members.aol.com/ahaynes33/index.htm), and was reminded why they are classics. It gets incredibly sappy at the end, and it's rife with fic cliche's, but it CREATED half those cliches, so it can be forgiven. ;) 12 Rites is my personal favorite - a perfect blend of UST and mythology casefile. It's INCREDIBLY long, and what would be considered out-of-print, but I'd love to see what people thought of it.

I'll put it in the queue. We are going to be starting into a long series of post-"The Truth" recs starting July 11, with Ghosts by Anjou and then we'll be doing daily recs from the 18th until the 3rd of August. A reccathon in honor of the movie. But after that, it is pretty open.

Well, obviously I've been keeping up my own fic marathon and I have another rec: Sounds of Silence (http://web.archive.org/web/20010306224416/www.goodnet.com/~thalia/stories/Sounds.txt) by GirlGone. Casefile and angst up the wazoo. CancerAngst, at that. My favorite ;)

I think we will be restarting book club in a week or two. You'll be back in the queue. I don't even remember where we were...
