Nomination post

Is there a story that you would like to discuss? Do you want to talk about some of the classics of the genre, like "Iolokus" or "Parabiosis"? Do you want to pick shorter stories, so that we can fit in more variety? Do you like casefiles? Character studies? The possibilities are endless.

Nominate your choices here, and support the nominations for other stories that interest you. Once we have a few suggestions, I'll try to draw up a schedule that suits everyone.

If you are still planning to post more first-time stories, how about "Heated" by Joann Humby, I found it via a rec on Haven. It's a missing scene in The Erlenmeyer Flask.

Okay, I'll put it in the queue. It's a sweet little story.

in the vein of first-time stories, i'd like possibly be able to rec Butterflies All Tied Up (http://underthewing.com/bugs/butterflies.html).

and now I'm going to go hide my head under something in mortification.

has the comm read machines of freedom by <user="amalnahurriyeh">? i've not read it but references to it (and the other fics in that universe) are starting to come up outside of my own humble flist which makes me think it might be a fun fic to read and discuss here.

Okay, so I have been out of the fandom for a while so this is a bit cheeky...but when I came back to it I read a story that made me feel so desperately sad, yet it was believable too. It may not be popular with the fandom, it could be considered AU, but is it? Whilst the Mulder/Scully relationship is drawn here in a believable context, stalwart romo fans will find it beyond comprehension. I am interested to see what the no-romos think...It's OMINOUS by Louise Marin.

Louise http://tooms.gossamer.org/display.php?ominous.Marin.

Sorry, don't know how to make a one click link but I am sure you will find it. it's on Gossamer....for a lighter touch. try her Midnight Markup, sweet and funny....

I would like to rec' a very old favourite of mine: "The Pact", by Madeleine Partous.

We did read and discuss this a few years back but if you want, we can do it as a rerun at some point.

Hi, I'd like to nominate "Recovery" by Leyla Harrison, or any of her fics. She was a beautiful writer and an enthusiastic participant in the fandom. I only just realized that it has been ten years ago this month since she passed away.

At some point we should get around to Khyber's Sokol. It's rather long but moves like gangbusters. You know where to find it.

I consider it a modern masterpiece. Nothing like tipping your hand.

I forgot to say when you posted this that I definitely agree. Just maybe not for a bit, since we need a bit of a breather after LDW. Plus, is it just me or does Sokol feel like a summer read?

I'm not sure if I'm doing this right, heh. This might or might not have been covered before: Kipler's Waiting (http://replay.web.archive.org/20071231220458/http://members.aol.com/kipler/waiting.html), written after Gethsemane. I don't think the next season had aired yet, at that time.

Reasons: She handles her angst skillfully. Very light touch.

She's really excellent. I'm not sure if we have discussed it or not. We occasionally do do a re-run. If it's been a year or more we can just do it again...

Arlington's "With a Vengeance." I'm not exactly reccing it--don't hang *that* on me--but I thought it would be an interesting one to test to destruction.

Certitude by Justin Glasser. But maybe I'll need to add it to Fugues, because I can't read this copy.

[identity profile] estella-c.livejournal.com 2011-06-23 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It's occurred to me that we have referred to Iolokus quite a bit, particularly in our discussion of Human Credentials, and I would really enjoy a group look at the *other* Mustang Sally/RivkaT blockbuster, which does not get nearly the attention or positive press: Tikkun Olum.

It's a conversation-starter, which actually kind of proves its value.

[identity profile] amyhit.livejournal.com 2011-07-06 06:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure it was covered a couple of years ago, before my time here. I'm sad about that, though, because I'd kind of love an excuse to reread it, and a chance to discuss it. So maybe there's some chance of doing a rerun. I do seem to remember it having been thoroughly discussed at the time, though, so unless we elect to ignore the old comments, we might get kind of bogged down in what everyone else already said about it. Just a concern. We'll have to see what Wen thinks.

A scene in "Waiting" reminded me of a story that's stuck with me for years: "The Crouching Thing", by Sarah Ellen Parsons.

http://www.keyofx.org/fiction_sarah%20ellen%20parsons-crouching%20thing.txt

It's creepy and weird and horrific and contains some absolutely beautiful writing. It seems like a story people will either love or hate, which might be interesting to discuss.

Reading "Certitude" made me think of one of my favorite post-FTF fics: "Get Up, Mulder" by Tesla. (I'm typing this on my phone, so I can't link it but it's at Gossamer). The summary? "Mulder recalls the trip back."

It's not terribly long, and while it's definitely MSRish, it's not in-your-face, for those who love the UST.

Great suggestion! Reading "Certitude" made me think of "Get Up Mulder," too. We're going to do Khyber v. Season Seven next in its entirety, so if you have 'em, dig out that box set.

I only just discovered this fantastic community a few days ago, and I've since been slowly devouring it page by page and adding new fic recs to my neverending list. I just want to take this opportunity to say a massive thank you to all the maintainers and contributors for giving me hours upon hours of entertainment. I can't wait to get stuck in and perhaps contribute a little myself. :)

Firstly I'd like to nominate a fic that I've just read for the first time, Syntax and Measure by MustangSally (http://fluky.gossamer.org/story.php?story_title=syntax&filename=&author_name=mustangsally&author_id=&episode=&summary=&rating=&keyword=&genre=&subgenre=&join=and). I've looked through the community tags and I don't think this particular story has been discussed here before. It's a Scully/Other fic (which is rare in itself) with a pretty unique casefile, and it contains one of my favourite original fic characters ever. I'd be fascinated to read the member's thoughts on the story and it's positives and negatives (including the lack of Mulder and the rather strangely absent M/S interaction), and of course I'd love to contribute my own thoughts and general musings.

Thank you. It's always nice to be appreciated. :D

We have a lot of fun here, and I'm always happy when new people find us.

"Syntax and Measure." What a great suggestion. It's been years since I first read it, so I look forward to your thoughts.

Not a nomination, but a question: would it be possible to have tags for authors? I'm reading some of the recs Amyhit gave me (KINDLE I LOVE YOU!)and I'd like to know if they've ever been reviewed in the book club but there isn't really a way to find this out besides scrolling down page after page.

Just sayin' :)

*cracks knuckles*

I would like to nominate Grace Realised (http://www.reocities.com/Area51/Dreamworld/6142/gracereal.txt) by Michaela. I will be providing the tissues.

And also Tangible (http://whispersofx.net/whispersofx/stories/tangible.txt) by Blueswirl (but just  the first part which is perfect as a stand alone not "Summer" and "Fall" which IMO are very inferior pieces. But the first part is a breathtaking post apocalyptic fic.

And Little Earth (http://www.xanthe.org/viewstory.php?sid=195) by Xanthe. Because how often do we get a fic from the point of view of Samantha? And it is a truly gut wrenching fic.

Yeah, I'm an angst junkie, sue me. :)

[identity profile] estella-c.livejournal.com 2011-11-23 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been told to recommend JET's "An Influence of Stars." Like I don't have enough to do...

I think Khyber of blessed memory was high on Tangible. Not drugs, just prose.

[identity profile] badforthefish.livejournal.com 2011-11-28 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Tangible must have been the first post-col fic I ever read, which made me go "Oh wow!"

I've got one moar rec:

The Lure of The Fox
(http://shippers.fredfarm.com/fanfic/stories/LureOfTheFox1.txt) by Caroline O'Callaghan. It's a 1997 fic so I'm not sure how well it will have aged. But it's got Mulder and Scully camping in the woods, cancer angst, a female Sheriff with a cute crush on Scully, Mulder/Scully UST then hot RST and a serial killer who calls himself "The Fox".

I'd like to suggest "Comfortably Numb" by Paige Caldwell. I just got through reading it this afternoon and found it really interesting. A very different take on Scully but believable.

Have y'all ever done "Five Things that Never Happened to Dana Scully" by [livejournal.com profile] threeguesses? It might be my favourite of her fics. (And G, I totally promise to comment if you actually post it. Cough.)

[identity profile] amyhit.livejournal.com 2012-02-10 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I would LOVE to do this fic. It's probably my favorite of hers as well, and I think it will make for some good discussion. With five different universes to consider, how could it not?

Long time lurker, first time poster. Forgive me!

I'd like to nominate "Sandcastles for Pele" by JL (formerly JaimeLyn). It's MSR, post IWTB, and probably my absolute favorite fic in that category (and there are two or three other really good ones out there already).

It's a long four-parter, but totally, totally worth it.

http://jlmfromnyc.livejournal.com/458.html (http://jlmfromnyc.livejournal.com/458.html)

(I highly recommend checking out her other work as well. JL has blown me away with almost everything she's written, esp. her more current stuff.)

Hey, I finally got around to nominating a fic!

a weatherman to know which way the wind blows (http://42number.livejournal.com/43400.html)

One of my fave Mulder-centric fics -- maybe even my favourite.
