Nomination post

Is there a story that you would like to discuss? Do you want to talk about some of the classics of the genre, like "Iolokus" or "Parabiosis"? Do you want to pick shorter stories, so that we can fit in more variety? Do you like casefiles? Character studies? The possibilities are endless.

Nominate your choices here, and support the nominations for other stories that interest you. Once we have a few suggestions, I'll try to draw up a schedule that suits everyone.

Hi. I'm a long-time fan who recently returned to X-Files fic (I used to read posts as they came in on ATXC! my, how things have changed). I've slowly been working through old posts on this site, and have thoroughly enjoyed the selections and commentary. I recently came across a story that you might consider covering at some point in the future. It's a tightly plotted casefile with spot-on characterization from an author I hadn't heard of, though she may be well known to the fandom now.

Salvador (http://ioho.org.uk/salvador.txt)

Thank you, Jane, and welcome to [livejournal.com profile] xf_book_club. I found your nomination in the spam folder, probably because of the link. I'm posting it today.

Cheers!

This was mentioned waaaay upstream but I don't think it was discussed: Prison of Innocents (at gossamer). It's a case/msr and definitely on the long side. If there is other interest in discussing it at some point, I would definitely re-read and join in.

I started 6hourgirls' Umbra Reverie (“http://archiveofourown.org/series/120708”) and was impressed by the prologue and the first chapter. Has anybody read this? Would it be a potential Book Club candidate?

[identity profile] tri-sbr.livejournal.com 2014-07-10 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I read it a few months ago and enjoyed it. I imagine it would make for decent discussion. I think there may be a sequel in the works.

This one is long, so if we ever get around to discussing it I'd suggest not on the heels of another long casefile.

Kinesthesia, by Amy/Spookey247
(http://www.reocities.com/spookey_247/kin_000.html)

It's at Gossamer under "Amy" as well.

It's a tropey guilty pleasure fic. Mulder and Scully go undercover as carnies to solve an arson mystery. It's weird and sexy and kind of silly and tropey (did I mention tropey?), but it's a fun read.

Another long one. I hope there are some short fics lurking in the queue.

Another short/shortish one (that is also light, funny, and has baseball!Scully and baseball!Mulder) is The Field of Dreams Where I Died by David Stoddard-Hunt. (Not related in any way to TFWID ep, fortunately.)

I'm not deadset on discussing this one (or anything else I mention, really); just trying to do my part and help with the idea pipeline. :)

I've been scrolling through the vignette section on Gossamer to see if anything jumped out at me, and I landed on this:

All the Wildflowers, by Martha (http://fluky.gossamer.org/display.php?AllTheWildflowers.Martha)

Frohike goes to visit Scully in the hospital during the events of One Breath.

I've never read anything by this author before. It looks like she did a lot of Gunmen-centric work.

Would really love to read discussions on 'All The Mulders' by Alloway and 'Bonemeal' by Magdeleine.

I know this hits a pretty big sore spot for almost everyone, so I tread lightly, but I just read bugs' "Six Times Someone Learns About William" and thought I'd put it out there as my first nomination. I actually found it to be rather therapeutic for S8 and S9 and the William storyline as a whole, even while canon compliance abounds.

I found this story incomplete in a couple locations, not at all at gossamer, but in full here:

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9781352/1/Six-Times-Someone-Learns-About-William

If you don't feel compelled to post it, I won't be bothered. I'm sure I could come up with something much less depressing. ;)

QUESTION

[identity profile] madmakny.livejournal.com 2015-04-19 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
First time posting here and I know this is ridiculously OT. But I'm in desperate need of some help. There is a classic X-Files fic that sort of starts off Mulder/Diana and Scully gets infected with the oilien and there's a somewhat controversial rough sex scene with her and Mulder while she's infected. I read this fic a decade ago or something and now can't for the life of me remember the title. I asked around and no one knew what I was talking about. I figured if anyone would know, it'd be you wonderful people.

Thanks,

Melissa (ScullyLikesScience on AO3)

That's "Human Credentials" by Scarlet Baldy (Scarlet at AO3). It's a great story.

We discussed the fic here: http://xf-book-club.livejournal.com/46602.html

You can read it at Gossamer or at her website.
http://undertherug.net/Scarlet/HumanCred.htm

If you need to know a fanfic, best place to ask is The X-Files Lost and Found: http://www.boards2go.com/boards/board.cgi?&user=anwylyd

Nomination

(Anonymous) 2015-06-25 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I would like to nominate the new Prufrock's Love fic, SN1572, located at the site Colonization Headquarters and rec'd on Haven. It is a re-worked story based on Negative Utopia, which was previously reviewed here. I am a lurker and have never posted here before, but enjoy the nominations and the comments made by readers more experienced in fanfiction than I am. I apologize for my ignorance if this story has been previously nominated.

It has not. Even if it had, people are encouraged to second nominations.

I had been considering posting this for discussion, so I'll consider this a second. If you would like to come out of lurking, you don't need a livejournal to join. You can use your twitter account or even Facebook.

All good suggestions. It's been a long while since I read Mobius. Is it at Gossamer? I just re-read Pillar of Salt, and she's posted it to Gossamer and re-written a key scene. I'll have to look for The Ghost of You. Her website is down.

Would you like me to add you to the community so that you can comment unscreened?

I was just reading some of the back story posts, and loved "atlas" by sohmer. There were several stories bookmarked at the bottom of sohmer's author page, and I clicked through to "Endeavors Too Short of Desires" by leiascully. Really enjoyed that as well. Not sure if it's been nominated before? http://archiveofourown.org/works/15557

I loved that fic when I read it years ago; however, I'm tempted to wait for her to finish "Visitor," her revival speculation fic and post that instead. It might make for better discussion? See what you think?

I just commented on the top ten recs post and said I would head over here with a nomination, so here I am. I want to put so kiss me goodbye's "The Lambs" out there because this is a colonization fic that deserves discussion. It's been a WIP, but parts I and II are finally complete. It might be worth waiting until part III is up, but this has been a WIP since 2008, so no guarantees when that would happen. But anyway, it's one of my favorites and I think it's worthy of our time, part III or not. See what you think.

This isn't one of those fics that kills off William's parents, is it? Because I won't read that genre.

Okay, well. It's not at Gossamer (why?) but I found it at another site. I'll give a look. Thanks for the nomination.

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but damn, there's 5 pages of comments on here. D:

Back in the day when I merely dabbled in fic, one of the two I read was Blinded by the White Light (https://archiveofourown.org/series/1118) by dashakay. I can't find the other one, but it involved Mulder and/or Scully interacting with Charlie, who was pretty well-developed in that fic. Oh well.

Anyway, it was written (or at least set) in or before the end of season 7, apparently. It's what would now be an AU fic, post-col, where the alien invasion was cut short by "the Others," a different race of "aliens," (quotes intentional there) who saved humanity, or what was left of it once the invading aliens were defeated. The process of saving the survivors involved wiping most of their memories, so they all had to start afresh in climate-controlled domes created by the Others. Because almost all children were wiped out in all the havoc, people were REAL eager to start new families, so people sort of just dated and BOOM, marriage and kid.

The story follows Scully and her life after the invasion with her husband and her 2-year old. She has a different profession and has little snippits of memories, but she wants to remember more. It's taboo to talk about Before, though, because many people don't want to remember what they've lost and can never get back. Her husband is unsympathetic. Scully knows she's missing something big and by chance finds a friend in a guy in the same boat as her. They bond. Things happen.

I clearly can't summarize for crap, but here's the author's tagline:

What are we, but the sum of our memories?

There's a companion fic that delves a little into the setting a bit more with a little explanation behind Mulder and Scully's experiences early in the first story: Open to White (https://archiveofourown.org/works/22684)

I don't know if it's on par with other recs in here, but I've liked it for a long while. After staying up late reading the entire thing again, it was what inspired me to find more fic, and thus, here I am in this lovely community. :)

EDIT: Oh yeah, is NC-17.

EDIT 2: Hot damn, my essay up there is apparently not common in the rec comments. Sorry. D:

I love both of these stories. We did discuss "Blinded by White Light" early in the community's history, back in 2008: http://xf-book-club.livejournal.com/9915.html. There are some relatively recent comments on the post from a couple of newer members, too.

We do occasionally post reruns of popular stories. If I get a second request, if you can round up one more person who is interested in discussing the fic, I will gladly repost it for you.
