I thought "Night Giving Off Flames" would be an interesting choice to follow "Machines of Freedom." At first glance, they couldn't be more different in style, tone, and structure. But both stories address an important theme in our fictional universe: how loss can change our world-view, our sense of self, even our destiny. I think it's one of the best in The X-Files fandom in the post-colonization genre.
