Whenever I need cheering up, there are certain authors and fics I always revisit. Kel is one of those writers and this is one of those fics.

"Angular Momentum" is a gen-ish casefile/x-file which fits into canon, has the Mulder/Scully partnership at its center, and is written by an author who likes both characters! It’s mostly vintage Kel: snappy dialogue, intricate plotting, with a side order of political/social satire. The Lone Gunmen all play pivotal roles in this story, too. Oh! I nearly left out the best part: in a memorable and luminous sequence, Mulder and Scully journey to the "lower world," where they meet their spirit guides. This would have made a great episode, with its perfect mixture of humor, murder, and mysticism.

True confession. I love this story so much I commissioned fanart for it and gave it to the writer. Obviously, I love the writer, too. And the artist, Ravenari, is amazing. Click on the link after you’ve read the fic.

I love angst and fix-it fics (and the writing of prufrock's love) but I'm ready to take a break from the post-series, post-IWTB setting, and read something set earlier in the series. This rec comes from last year's The Ten Greatest XF Fics You've Ever Read. Read what [livejournal.com profile] zinnia03 had to say about "America's Games":

America’s Games by Sarah Segretti. Author’s synopsis: “Assigned to the bioterrorism squad at the 1996 Summer Olympics, Scully tries to make sense of confusing evidence, her baffling partner and her uncertain place in a world where the X-Files don't matter.” Set just post-Talitha Cumi and Herrenvolk. Sort of a fish-out-of-water story with Scully temporarily assigned away from Mulder and the X-Files, though of course Mulder can’t stay away long. Scully tries to puzzle out the information from files they found at Strughold Mining, and Mulder wants to investigate ginseng farms in Canada. Both are frustrated by their lack of progress, plus there's an undercurrent that is making them snipe at each other. High tension story that fits the mid-series tone.

Read America's Games.

I'd love to know what you thought of the story. The nomination post is always open for your suggestions and I will get back to posting them soon. You can also read this fic at Sarah Segretti's Author Page at Gossamer.

Yes, the mod is bypassing the queue again. "Manitou" by the same author was recced by [livejournal.com profile] mogster495. While it may be excellent, my mood is such that I can't read a gruesome case file fic. My favorite fic by Dryad is "Quiet, He'll Hear You," but I can't handle it right now either.

I read "Local Boy" a number of years ago, but I'd forgotten how much I liked it. The setting is Martha's Vineyard, where Scully and Mulder have traveled so that he might take care of some family business. "Local Boy" is part one of a series, "Country of the Crepescule," but I think it works as a standalone. If you do go ahead and read the entire series, please let us know what you thought of it, too. Dryad said she pictured this as taking place during season three, which makes sense in context, but I thought it had more of a season six vibe myself.

The link is to AO3 but all of Dryad's fic can be read at Gossamer as well.

Read "Country of the Crepescule: Local Boy"

Please send the author feedback, even if you only hit the kudo button. Then come back and let us know what you think. Don't forget to leave your suggestions in the nomination post.

We're back into the angst, this week, with a couple of vignettes that fill in some of the blanks the previous fics have hinted at about Mulder and Scully's past assignations, and the days of their early relationship. First up is "The Fall of Our Summer", a post ep for Drive, which Kyber originally posted to [livejournal.com profile] xf_is_love in 2009. Second we have "Poems", a post ep for Wetwired, and the second to last instalment in the KvsS7 universe.

The Fall of Our Summer

Poems

Only one more KvsS7 fic to go. Hopefully you've been fascinated, intrigued, or otherwise drawn in by the story so far, and you'll tune in five (or so) days from now, to reach the end of the road with us.

[livejournal.com profile] wendelah1 has been extra busy lately, so I'll be posting again this week. Because Human Credentials sparked a fair amount of discussion for its controversial sex scene, Wendelah suggested we read First/Second by Amal. Short and without a plot to speak of, it's not much like our last rec in any way, but it does feature a less than idyllic sex scene that is striking and worthy of discussion. Not to be mistaken for PWP, this fic is written with the skill and intelligence that is characteristic of Amal's writing.

Back when I was still having a normal life, I took on a number of Geocities-related projects. One is to recreate The Spooky Awards Archive, complete with working links, but minus the hideous graphics. Even before the demise of Geocities, the links had all gone dead on the old site. I did finish 1995 and put it up at Dreamwidth. Now that I am back working on that project, I thought it might be fun to read some of the stories that won awards back in the day. Believe it or not, some of them still hold up very well.

"Genius" is vintage Kipler, well-written, with believable season two-three Mulder/Scully interaction. It's genfic, which was more common then than now, or so I've heard, but in any case seems perfectly appropriate to me for the time period. The story is a case file/x-file, told from Scully's POV, involving a child abduction. Since it's not been that long since her own abduction, I think it's fair to say that Scully is a little creeped-out by this investigation. We all know how Mulder is with child abduction cases.

"Genius" won the 1995 Second Place award for "Most Carteresque," which I suppose is short-hand for the story that most resembles the show itself. Since I liked the show best back in the first few seasons, I was eager to see what a fine fanfiction writer could come up with that could fit seamlessly into the series canon. Kipler does not disappoint.

Kipler's old site went down when AOL Hometown closed, so the link is to her site, way-backed.

If anyone is still in touch with her, please let her know we are discussing her story. Please leave suggestions for next time at the nomination post.

This "old skool" story nominated by [livejournal.com profile] kukkaseksi is a casefile set in third season in the middle of something called "the infamous rift"(?) You long-time fans are going to have to explain that one to me. I never noticed a rift between Mulder and Scully in season three. No more than usual, anyway. Here is the info from Gossamer, although the link is from the Annex.
