wendelah1: (Trust No One)

This novel was nominated back in September 2015 by [livejournal.com profile] rainatlas. It was a WIP at the time and I've been burned enough times that I'm wary of WIPs. I'm allergic to fanfic about William. Despite my reservations, I trust [livejournal.com profile] rainatlas's judgement. I read the two sections that had been posted and agreed it was a fic worth our time. On September 24, 2016, Lamia (so kiss me goodbye) at long last completed the epic. And here we go...

"The Lambs"
Author: so kiss me goodbye
Summary: Mulder and Scully kidnap William.
Rated: Fiction T - English - Adventure/Family - [F. Mulder, D. Scully] William - Chapters: 44 - Words: 189,372

Author's Note: "This is a colonization adventure told from a child's perspective (excluding the prologue), and includes strong language, violence and gore, and themes that may upset."

Please leave feedback for the author. Love it, hate it, or "it's complicated," we'd love to hear your thoughts about "The Lambs." Remember, the nomination post is always open for your suggestions.

EDIT: I found a comment in the spam folder for this post that wasn't spam. It provided a link to this story at AO3. The Lambs.

A couple of months back on the "Silver Cornet" post, I asked members if anyone was still reading here. Would you believe I'm still getting comments on that post? Well, I am, most recently just a couple of days ago. A kind anon replied: "Yes! I'm new, and I'm HERE! Love this place! Don't ever quit. 😄" It was sweet, it cheered me up, and it reminded me that I hadn't posted a new story for awhile. It also made me realize how lucky I am to have a community like this, especially now, with the fandom being so dispersed and so comparatively small. Thank you, everyone. You guys are the best. ♥

Perusing the nomination post, I spotted the request from BonesLenka for fill-in fic for the period between IWTB and season 10. "Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys" is the fic I recommended to her back in February. It's an AU, but then thanks to the genius of Chris Carter, all nine previous seasons of the series are now AU. Like leiascully's "Visitor," this fic explores the relationship fallout resulting from Scully giving William up for adoption. As always, prufrock's love writes an exceptionally appealing Fox Mulder, complete with all of his charms and all of his character flaws. I enjoyed reading it very much. I hope you do, too.

Title: Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys
Author: prufrock's love
Email: prufrockslove@yahoo.com
Rating: R
Classification: Novel, MSR, Other
Summary: More than a decade had passed. Mulder had no reason to hole up in his apartment alone, wearing a Three Dog Night T-shirt with dried mustard on the hem and blue jeans that had seen better days. He wasn't "saving himself" for anyone. Especially not Her. Though she remained epically, beautifully, brilliantly kick-A-S-S.
Spoilers: We veer AU after season 7, with a few bits from 8 & 9.

Send feedback to the author, then come back and tell us what you think of "Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys." Don't forget, the nomination post is always open to your suggestions.

Commenting is fixed, thanks to LJ support.

Since my last post, Fox made the announcement that The X-Files is coming back for six episodes, date as yet to be determined. I hope Chris Carter has some idea of how to bridge the distance between IWTB and whenever he decides to set these six episodes. From past experience, my guess is he won't. It will be up to our fanfic writers to fill in the gap.

As it happens, our next story is gap-fic for the period between "The Truth" and the second movie, by a fine, new-to-the-fandom writer. It's episodic, character-driven, and written in third person omniscient, which almost never works for me in fic. It works here--the transitions feel seamless and naturalistic. Sohmer understands these characters, and writes them with unusual empathy and intelligence. I loved this fic and I hope you do, too.

Rating: Teen
Warnings: Author chose not to use archive warnings.
Characters: Dana Scully/Fox Mulder
Word Count: 3697
Summary: "This is how they live: shadow people on an edge of reality, here but not, shapes phasing into the periphery, deeper into some ghosted liminality."

Read atlas.

Hi, everyone. Does anyone still want to read and discuss fanfic?

I found this story from a new recs community on Tumblr: MSR Archive. It's not an archive in the traditional sense but each entry does have a picture, the author's summary and a short excerpt, as well as the link. It's the only story they've posted so far that I haven't read, but it was good enough to get me posting here again.

But first, a warning. If you hate the William arc, this is may not be the fic for you. It is not a fix-it fic, and it's certainly not a happy family AU, which understandably is what the fandom seems to prefer.

Instead, "Lucky" is future-fic, set post-IWTB. It reminds me a bit of Mulder's extended dream-fantasy from "Amor Fati" about the ordinary life he didn't choose. In this fic, it's Scully who is dreaming of a different life, a life where she didn't leave the FBI to go on the run, a life where together with Mulder, she gets to raise their son, rather than giving him up for adoption.

"She hears a woman in the supermarket bragging into the phone about how her baby is talking at nine months one evening, and she imagines what it'd be like if Will could have talked, could have made noise when he puckered his lips together, trying for 'Ma.' She couldn't have handled that, she doesn't think. She probably would have run away with him."/ Post-IWTB.

Rated: Fiction T - English - Angst/Family - F. Mulder, D. Scully, William - Words: 1,966

This was recently added to the nomination post by [livejournal.com profile] rainatlas and seconded by [livejournal.com profile] badforthefish. Written and posted last year for [livejournal.com profile] xf_is_love month, this story might have been used as an example of darkfic in our recent discussion. I read it when it was first posted and liked it a lot. It begins well and has an equally strong finish.

Summary: Certain important moments were missing from the William arc. My attempt to fill them in. The rating covers adult language and situations.

At 18,000+ words, it's not a short story, but it's divided into six easily consumed chunks.

You can read it at two places.

She actually started a sequel which hasn't been updated in awhile. Maybe if we flood her with feedback...
As always, come back and let us know what you think, and please leave your suggestions in the nomination post.

This is probably one of those stories that got recced everywhere back in the day. It's so good I wish I'd written it. Cucumberspy has a lovely, spare style, plus an ear for dialogue and an eye for detail. Season nine, AU, thank God.

There are warnings on the author's header. Heed them.

Summary: She thinks there's nothing anyone can take from her now.

Read Telephones.

SPOILERS IN THE COMMENT THREADS.

To those who celebrated, I hope you had a happy Christmas.

If you were hoping for Christmas recs, sorry, I'm fresh out. Try our holiday tag. You can check out this Tumblr rec post, too. For the "access denied" Gossamer links, just highlight and hit enter.

Since the beginning of the month, I've been driving the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van, doing one last set of recs for The X-Files before the community closes for good the middle of January.

"A World to Save" is one of the stories I posted to [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. Since I reformatted this and put it up at Fugues, I thought it might be a good choice for discussion. It's Scully-centric, dark but not unrelievedly so, in the way so many post-colonization stories are. I think it's one of the best colonization stories out there, right up there in quality with "Life During Wartime," although vastly different in scope and content.

Read A World to Save. Let us know what you think, where possible, leave feedback for the author, and put your suggestions in the nomination post.

The next fic was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] lightlack and enthusiastically seconded by myself. It’s written by [livejournal.com profile] threeguesses, who is one of my favorite writers to come out of the pre/post IWTB era. Her writing in this fandom was not prolific, but her stories have always stood out (at least for me) for their powerful concepts, enthralling emotional currents, and the deceptive simplicity of threeguesses’ writing. Undoubtedly you know how "five things" fics work, in which case you also know the title of this week’s fic tells you just about everything that can be revealed about it without spoiling the sense of discovery that comes with each new segment.

five things that never happened to dana scully

The author is still around and writing up a storm (though sadly not in this fandom), and I’m sure she would appreciate feedback. There’s lots to say about this fic, so please do let us know what you think. And, as always, the nomination post is open for new suggestions.

I hope everyone is having a fine weekend. Our next selection is a short-short by [livejournal.com profile] threeguesses. I like everything of hers I've read. You can find the rest of her work at her Master List of Fic.

What else? 600 words. No warnings. Summary: William meets a girl in the garden.
