This is straight from the FAQ. Not that that necessarily means anything . . .
I'm up for rerunning some of the recs, but at the same time...hmm. sometimes going back over things can make for a feeling of pathos. and i was thinking how back in January 09 (http://community.livejournal.com/xf_book_club/20605.html) you posted a rerun link to Jess Mabe's The Airport, which had been posted first in January 08. I followed the rerun link and read up on what people had been saying about The Airport. so i was thinking if we were going to do reruns, maybe we could do them that way - directing people's attention to them in addition to a new rec.
but in truth, i see that it may not work to do that. because when you did it for The Airport, there were no new comments posted on the fic. even my comment wasn't about The Airport, but about another one of Jess's fics, which we then ended up covering as well.
*huffs* obviously i am not offering any helpful advice, here. just thinking out loud, and in public, in the hopes that someone else will expound upon this. i just wouldn't want there to be a feeling of stagnation. there are some fics that deserve to be re-discussed. a lot of them, actually. Badlands got one comment. Ash got two. Scenes for Quiescence got four, and i'm pretty sure i'm not the only one who thinks that JET's holiday season gem is one of the best the fandom has produced. *huffs again*
there could be a rule (non-rigid) that we only rerun a fic every so often. a minimum of two new fics for ever rerun, maybe?
Yes, looking back over the older posts, some fics didn't generate much discussion--I guess everyone was busy or just didn't have much to say at the time. The lack of comments on Badlands in particular makes me sad--I adore that story and would love to reread and discuss it.
I think it could be interesting to revisit stories that have been discussed before--adding to the previous discussion and expanding on it. I wouldn't be discouraged from commenting on something just because it had been discussed before--but perhaps some readers would?
There was a time when I wasn't able to participate very much, so I've missed a lot. I've love another opportunity to see recs for any great stories I missed the first time around and really need to read, so I'm all for it.
It's OK with me, largely because I am new-ish to the fandom (just started watching TXF last October!) and there's probably a lot of "old" stuff that I haven't seen.
this is so great, i was pointed today to a post in this community two years ago for a fic and i was sad i didn't get to participate in the discussion. (i, too, am new to the fandom, so i'm all over the idea of revisiting "old" stuff, like snoopdawg said.)
Yep, count me in. There can never be too many things for me to mouth off about, and my husband would concur.
Also, we have a fandom here with both a complicated past and a healthy influx of new members. So history classes are a good idea. Not the lecture kind, the discussion kind.
