Today's short-short is "Intervention of Elves" by Lisby. It's a two-hour improv; the genre is post-col.

Before I forget, here's working link to "Eyes Shut". That's a damn sexy story.

We just blew past 150 stories, people. I guess posting a fic every other day for a solid four weeks will do that.

Today is also the birthday of one Dana Katherine Scully, who just turned 47 years young. To celebrate, how about reccing us a favorite Scully-centric story. Bonus points if it's not about the cancer arc or Emily. Extra bonus points if it's funny.

One of my favorites is "Failure to Die" by Kel. It's not about the cancer arc or Emily. Scully gets to act like a real doctor in it, by actually being a doctor during an undercover assignment. Mulder is undercover, too. He gets to play a Richie-Rich type on parole for drugs, working as a orderly. Gee, that's a stretch. It is narrated by the one and only Jerry Luskin who gets to play a retired FBI agent, now working as chief of security at the hospital, also perfect type-casting. They are all guarding a Mafia guy who is supposed to testify in federal court, except for he's in a coma, if I recall. Oh, and the hospital is haunted. It is a hoot. And Scully is awesome in it. Go read it now.

I should probably give Kel her own tag.

Okay, so post about "Intervention of Elves," "Eyes Shut," Scully's birthday, and don't forget, a fav Scully story! I realize it is now February 24th in most of the world. I can't help it if I live in PST.

Less cheesily known as:

THE SCHEDULE FOR SHORT STORY MONTH

Thanks to everyone for the great recommendations. [livejournal.com profile] wendelah1 and I did some picking and choosing, but we did our best to ensure that there will be something for everyone, and plenty to discuss. As [livejournal.com profile] emily_shore said in my place, nearly three years ago: Hopefully [we] haven't left out anything you loved dearly.

We'll be introducing a new story every two days, but there's no expiration date on the discussions once they get started. Links are included in the schedule below, in case anyone feels like getting ahead of the game and doing some reading in advance. Every one of these fics is under one thousand words in length - five minute reads (two minutes for you speed readers) - so don't let the rapidity of the schedule intimidate you. Join in when you can, comment when and where you choose, express yourself with an essay or with a single sentence, insights are great but so are opinions, don't be afraid to express yours - and let's have fun!

If you've been following along, here at [livejournal.com profile] xf_book_club, I post a new story every week (or two, or three). What this means is that we tend to focus on stories that take time to read and discuss--in other words, longer stories and novels.

However, there are some great vignettes and short-short stories in the X-Files fandom, which tend to be over-looked here.

[livejournal.com profile] amyhit were discussing the possibility of a Short Story Week, where we'll post and discuss a different short story every day. But first we'd like your suggestions! Back in 2008, we didn't put an upper limit on the word count, but this time, we'd like to try to keep the stories at 1000 words or less. Drabbles, vignettes, one-shots: anything goes, as long as it doesn't exceed 1000 words in length.

Please post suggestions in the comment here. If you have a link or somewhere you know it's archived, please post that as well.

Thanks to all who voted in my poll re: story reruns. Although the turn-out was low, the trend seemed clear enough: the vast majority of voting members were fine with reruns. If you feel differently, now is your time to let us know. I'll leave the poll open until I figure out how to close it. Ahem.

Originally suggested by [livejournal.com profile] emily_shore, we first discussed "To Carthage Then I Came" April 19, 2008. Most recently, [livejournal.com profile] maybe_amanda nominated it. In her words: "It's short. It's haunting. It raises a lot of questions. It gives us very few answers."

The link is to [livejournal.com profile] annakovsky's journal, so leave her a comment or send her a PM, then come back and let us know what you think. As always, suggestions for next time are welcomed at the nomination post.

Hello, everyone!  I'm guest-moderating today to introduce a story I absolutely adore.

This story by [livejournal.com profile] maidenjedi  was inspired partly by a discussion among several of us about how it seemed there was a rather large and vocal group of readers out there who did not want to read post-series stories that were angsty.  They wanted to see happy endings only: Mulder and Scully married, with William back and five other kids, riding in the minivan to soccer practice.

This was the author's response, wickedly funny with a dark streak running through it.

Some Sunny Day

As always, let the author know what you think; let us know what you think; and please, give us your suggestions for next time.

Today's story is "nightblindness" by shaye, recommended by our own [livejournal.com profile] wendelah1. Here's what the author has to say about it:

summary: Getting through the night together is far more perilous than this. Otherwise known as The One Where Scully Actually Gets Some.

rating: PG-13

warnings: Mulder/Scully, Doggett/Scully, Doggett/Reyes, implied Scully/Reyes. Radical tense shifts. Not nearly enough sex.

Remember to leave feedback for the author, tell us what you think, and make a suggestion for next time!

Hello again, and welcome back to the XFIWTBPPPTFAT! (I'll stop calling it that soon, I swear.) Today begins the fic-a-day portion of our fic-a-thon, so we're moving away from the novel-length stories and into shorter fics so you can keep up.

Today we've got the quiet, brooding "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" by the inimitable Marigold. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lightlack for the recommendation!

Vague, teasery summary: It's not always Mulder who does the ditching.

This won't take you long to read at all, and it's worth the effort. The joy of this post-series marathon for me is experiencing all the different takes on "We're fugitives from the law and one of us just broke out of jail. What happens next?" In a week's time, we'll know for sure, so this is our last chance to review the spectrum of speculation before canon comes in and gives us the official answer.

Read it, review it, and give us your suggestions for next time.

Today for your reading pleasure,  I give you This Room and Everything In It by Suture. It is a fascinating and, well, creepy look at the Mulder/Scully- dynamic- from a third party's unique perspective.  It offers some interesting insights into Alex Krycek as well.

Title: This Room and Everything in It
Author: Suture
Rating: NC-17 for the beast with two backs and bad language
Email: holly_springs94706@yahoo.com
Category: S, 3rd POV, M/S, brief Krycek/O
Spoilers: None that I can think of. In my mind, this story takes place at some point post-Dreamland. The blue suede Hush Puppies might be a little anachronistic, but, really, God isn't always in the details.
Feedback: is completely habit-forming.
Summary: Sex and surveillance

Let us know what you think; let the author know what you think; and please, let us know your suggestions for next time.

Today's selection is nominated by me. It is a very dark take on the possible consequences of the events of "Emily."

Title: The Mill
Author: [personal profile] cofax7
Here is what the author wrote about the story:
Rating: R for content
Spoilers: through season 5
Content Warning: Deep dark angst. Don't say you weren't warned.
Summary: A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted for her children, because they were not. Jeremiah 31: 15-17.

And for those of us who love this sort of thing, here is the DVD commentary for "The Mill".

A real classic today, nominated by [livejournal.com profile] memento1.

Today's selection, Never Enough, was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] idella. Although I haven't read it yet, I suspect underage members should not be reading this.

Story Notes: A line is stolen from an amazing episode of Law And Order
called 'Aftermath'. My apologies but it nestled in there and I couldn't
budge it.

Summary: "But oh, these little earthquakes / doesn't take much to rip
us into pieces." - T. Amos

Edited: to insert the missing link...
Edit the Second: I have this on good authority that this is an "R" rating, for violence, language and non-explicit sexuality.

Before introducing today's story, allow me to point out that yesterday's is languishing with no comments at all. You can do better, people!

Anyway, our selection for today was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] idella. It might be interesting to compare it with "Table for Two" (which we discussed a couple of days ago), given that both of them deal with questions of loss.

Title: Undone.
