A couple of months back on the "Silver Cornet" post, I asked members if anyone was still reading here. Would you believe I'm still getting comments on that post? Well, I am, most recently just a couple of days ago. A kind anon replied: "Yes! I'm new, and I'm HERE! Love this place! Don't ever quit. 😄" It was sweet, it cheered me up, and it reminded me that I hadn't posted a new story for awhile. It also made me realize how lucky I am to have a community like this, especially now, with the fandom being so dispersed and so comparatively small. Thank you, everyone. You guys are the best. ♥

Perusing the nomination post, I spotted the request from BonesLenka for fill-in fic for the period between IWTB and season 10. "Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys" is the fic I recommended to her back in February. It's an AU, but then thanks to the genius of Chris Carter, all nine previous seasons of the series are now AU. Like leiascully's "Visitor," this fic explores the relationship fallout resulting from Scully giving William up for adoption. As always, prufrock's love writes an exceptionally appealing Fox Mulder, complete with all of his charms and all of his character flaws. I enjoyed reading it very much. I hope you do, too.

Title: Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys
Author: prufrock's love
Email: prufrockslove@yahoo.com
Rating: R
Classification: Novel, MSR, Other
Summary: More than a decade had passed. Mulder had no reason to hole up in his apartment alone, wearing a Three Dog Night T-shirt with dried mustard on the hem and blue jeans that had seen better days. He wasn't "saving himself" for anyone. Especially not Her. Though she remained epically, beautifully, brilliantly kick-A-S-S.
Spoilers: We veer AU after season 7, with a few bits from 8 & 9.

Send feedback to the author, then come back and tell us what you think of "Dr. Scully's School for Exceptional Boys." Don't forget, the nomination post is always open to your suggestions.

I hope you all have been enjoying Fanfiction BINGO. We still need fics for several categories, including The Coffeeshop AU, Straight People Do Not Exist In This AU and "Their tongues battled for dominance." I don't know about the first two but there must be plenty of candidates for the latter.

This was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] elis_xf way back in January of last year. True Confession: I haven't posted it because I haven't read it in years, and was too lazy to reread it before posting it. (I've gotten out of the habit of reading long fanfic but I'm trying to turn over a new leaf.) So we'll read (or reread) and discuss it together.

I thought about breaking it into two parts for discussion purposes. Rather than do that, if people want to discuss a block of chapters, or even one key chapter, or a specific topic, if you put a header on your comment we can follow the threads. I think we can still do that here, at least I know I can.

RATING: NC-17
CLASSIFICATIONS: (SAR)
KEYWORDS: Scully/Other, MSR
SPOILERS: Through US season 7
TIMELINE: Though this takes place sometime after "all things", in this universe "Requiem" did NOT happen...

Summary: Believing Mulder dead, Scully slowly moves on to a new life (or an old one). But perhaps the adventure has not yet ended...

Read Water's Edge.

She's back. "Original Sin" is [livejournal.com profile] syntax6's long unfinished WIP, abandoned in 2008 after six gripping chapters. To my surprise and delight, she has returned to fandom, and over the past few weeks, posted the remainder of the story. She updated her website, too, adding a half dozen or more stories in a new fandom. It looks good.

It's post Fight the Future, and Scully has moved to Utah. Unfortunately for her, the X-Files followed her there. She must not have noticed that the state emblem is a big old beehive. Poor Scully. When will she learn? Tags: NC-17, mytharc, casefile, M/O, S/O, MSR, chipfic, Samantha, horribly absent & hugely apologetic author.

If you haven't already, email her some feedback, then please come back and let us know what you think.

Remember, the nomination post is always open for your suggestions.

Hi! I had spotty internet access the later part of March so [livejournal.com profile] amyhit kindly filled in for my last turn. I'm bypassing the queue this time around to suggest a story I've been meaning to reread for at least six months. "Laws of Motion" is a sequel to "Universal Invariants," which we discussed back in November, 2010. If you haven't read her first story, you won't get as much out of the sequel. (But you totally should read UI! It's my favorite of [livejournal.com profile] syntax6's stories!)

However, if you don't want to read "Universal Invariants" before tackling "Laws of Motion," here's a brief summary: "Universal Invariants" is an au in which Scully is living with her boyfriend Ethan (who was deleted from the pilot) when she is assigned to the X-Files. The novel spans all of season one and the beginning of season two through "One Breath," and has scenes from many of the episodes artfully woven through it. There is also an original casefile, which is the B plot, with the A plot being their developing partnership, and the effect it has on her personal life, especially her relationship with Ethan. HUGE SPOILER here: Scully gets engaged to Ethan after the X-Files are closed down, then has sex (amazing sex!) with Mulder while they are in Arecibo, Puerto Rico during "Little Green Men." Major awkwardness ensues, Mulder and Scully never discuss it, and she is too ashamed to tell Ethan. Then Scully is kidnapped by Duane Barry. Months later, when she is returned, not only is she missing time from the abduction, she can't remember earlier events, including what happened at Arecibo. Mulder can't bring himself to tell her. She never regains the lost memories, but breaks up with Ethan anyway. The End.

So. "Laws of Motion" picks up at the beginning of season five, just after "Redux 2." Scully is cured of cancer and Mulder has just brought her home from the hospital, when there is a phone call from her ex-boyfriend, Ethan. He's in jail, accused of murdering a colleague, and wants their help. Like "Universal Invariants," "Laws of Motion" is structured around a casefile, the murder Ethan has been accused of committing, but the story's focus is squarely on the secret (from the previous story) Mulder has been keeping from Scully and the consequences of that deception. It's a fun read and I remember loving it almost as much as "Universal Invariants."

Send feedback, tell Syntax6 we miss her, and please come back to let us know what you thought.

After reading "Five Things That Never Happened to Dana Scully" last week, it seems appropriate that this week's offering is also about a "road not taken." Since three members separately expressed some interest in reading it, and because Sabine is an accomplished and entertaining writer, "Dance Card" is now on our dance card.

Author's Note )

That will all make sense after you read the story, I promise. "Dance Card" has two sequels: "What Happened After That" and "Moonshine," which could be subtitled "What Happened After What Happened After That." The links are all to Gossamer under "Sabine" if the links get broken; the first and third are also at Fugues Fiction Archive. Discussion on any and all of the three is welcome. Sab is [livejournal.com profile] iamsab here and Sab at AO3, but alas, these stories have never been re-posted to either location.

Leave feedback, leave suggestions, and come back for discussion, which is still ongoing for the last two fics we read, by the way. You guys are awesome.

Read "Dance Card".

Read "What Happened After That".

The next fic was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] lightlack and enthusiastically seconded by myself. It’s written by [livejournal.com profile] threeguesses, who is one of my favorite writers to come out of the pre/post IWTB era. Her writing in this fandom was not prolific, but her stories have always stood out (at least for me) for their powerful concepts, enthralling emotional currents, and the deceptive simplicity of threeguesses’ writing. Undoubtedly you know how "five things" fics work, in which case you also know the title of this week’s fic tells you just about everything that can be revealed about it without spoiling the sense of discovery that comes with each new segment.

The author is still around and writing up a storm (though sadly not in this fandom), and I’m sure she would appreciate feedback. There’s lots to say about this fic, so please do let us know what you think. And, as always, the nomination post is open for new suggestions.

Fall is here, though you'd never know it by the temperatures in SoCal. I read "Up the Ladder" in 2007, when I was new to the fandom. It's novella length, at 30,000+ words, but wow, it is a fast read. I would have pegged the word count at half that or less. It was originally posted in 1997. Yep. This is old-school fanfiction at its best.

Summary: Marita comes through for Mulder, giving him what he wants most. But twenty-five years haven't brought as many changes as he might have thought, and her gift might be more dangerous than anything he's faced to date. And what's up with those bees? A potpourri of Conspiracy elements with many old favorites present. Note: Almost everything here about bees is actually true, except for the parts that are just paranoia.

"Up the Ladder"

The link is to AO3, where you can easily leave feedback for our author, but you can read this at her website or at Gossamer if you prefer. Leave your suggestions at the nomination post. And don't forget to let us know what you think.

Punk Maneuverability is one of the X-Files fandom's long-time authors. A quick scroll of her Gossamer page tells me she did most of her writing for this fandom in 1997, but she continued to write XF fic for close to a decade. China, posted in 2006, is one of the last XF fics she's posted to date.

It's a short AU in which Scully has made a drastic change in her life, one that has left both she and Mulder's lives torn asunder. I don't want to say too much more about the plot, because part of what makes this fic intriguing is the way the reader doesn't immediately know exactly what's going on. I picked this fic because, though they are very different fics, the central tension of China is very similar to that of last week's rec: Scully's discontent and her desire for a "normal life".

This might be a little over the word limit but I remember it being worth it. Writing talent makes all the difference. Oh yeah, this is substituting for "The Right to Remain Silent" because we already read it here back in 2008. Feel free to go read it again. It's good, too.

RATING: NC-17

CLASSIFICATION: Angst, vignette, Scully/Other (But wait! Read my author's notes before you close this. *laugh*) Mod's Note: Author's note is at the site.

SPOILERS: Three Of A Kind

SUMMARY: They share a small laugh, understanding each other and not understanding themselves at all.

DISCLAIMER: They don't belong to me, but I am usually very careful with them. I don't deliberately give them BRAIN CANCER or TAKE THEIR KIDS AWAY like some people I could mention. Ahem.

Now that we've had a break, I thought it might be time to change things up a bit. There is going to be a theme evolving over the next few recommendations. Maybe I can call it "the exception that proves the rule."

To my mind, "God's Breath" is one of the best, most memorable mid-length novels in the fandom. I was heart-broken when it disappeared from the internet. Thanks to one of our fandom's fanfic savers, Jintian was able to post most of her X-Files stories, to Dreamwidth last year, including this one.

The mood is somber in this season six story, as it begins with the death of a close childhood friend and childhood sweetheart of Scully's, a death that occurred under mysterious circumstances. Since the events of "Tithonus," she and Mulder have been negotiating two profound change in their relationship: they are still partners at work, where they have the X-Files back, and they are also now lovers, with all of the attendant complications. Scully goes out to California to attend the funeral of her friend with her family, and gets involved in the case. Eventually, Mulder comes out to support her, and naturally, since he is convinced the case is an X-file, he gets involved, too.

It is told in first-person, Scully voice, which I rarely like or read, but which is quite well-done in "God's Breath."
