wendelah1: Scully and Mulder at the lake (lake okobogee)

What a nice response we got to "Oak Leaves in October." It's good to remember that there is more to this fandom than just the canon ship.

"Every Sparrow Falling" is a case file that is also an x-file. This is Mulder and Scully doing what they do best, investigating the paranormal. It's been some time since I last read this, but I remember being scared out of my wits. There is no summary from the author so here's the one from Raiders of the Lost Fanfic, Maybe Amanda's old rec site: "Casefile, paranormal, religion, madness. And hot dogs, peanuts, and Cracker Jack."

"This Humming Meadow" is a gracefully written look at Mulder and Scully and the X-Files as they were in the early seasons. There's a mostly-harmless x-file, some fly-fishing, a walk in a meadow, and a lot of UST. It's a perfect antidote for those back-to-work Monday blues.

Summary: Wrapping his arms around her helps and there's nothing surrounding them except this humming meadow, alive beneath the sun.

Our second Halloween fic this year is "Through the Fire," a very distinctive AU that basically incorporates a little bit of everything into the mix.

In this universe Mulder has been imprisoned for several years on false charges, and Scully has continued their work in his absence. Now she must cope with a dangerous case - an MoTW with its roots at the heart of the mytharc - while also coping with a sudden change in Mulder's circumstances. It's a tense, unusual, and downright creepy fic with an M/S dynamic that's intense and quite lovely. Diana, Jeffrey Spender, and Skinner also have parts to play.

Through the Fire

Oh my god, you guys, I'm SO SORRY! Anyone who downloaded the text file of the fic missed chapter 6! My face is literally in my palms. I read the whole fic and didn't even realize I'd missed an entire chapter, and from the looks of things an important one. I only just realized it now.

That is, from what I can tell, the only place the fic is posted. If the format (which is seasonally cute, but also rather visually loud) bothers you, I've uploaded the fic as one complete Word file, which you can download here.

Happy Halloween, everyone! And season's greetings to anyone who doesn't celebrate.

Kipler did most of her fic writing between 1995 and 1997, placing her solidly among the early era X-Files fanfic writers, though she didn't write Strangers and the Strange Dead - arguably her most widely recced story - until 2000.

Waiting was written, and is set, in the summer of 1997, after Gethsemane. Following the cryptic and devastating event of Mulder's evident demise, Scully inadvertently happens upon a casefile, and finds herself drawn into its eerie mystery while she bides time in and out of hospital rooms, waiting for her own imminent death to claim her. For such a small fic, there's a lot to this one. Kipler's writing is spare, intelligent, and deeply but subtly poetic - very in tune with the nuances of tension and emotion underlying surface reality.

I first read this fic about a year ago, and it left me feeling a curious combination of awestruck, dazed, a little bit sick with grief, and a little bit giddy with pleasure. But we've covered three of Kipler's fics already so I was hesitant to post Waiting for my own gratification alone. When I saw that [livejournal.com profile] coldthermistor had recced it, I could've hugged her.

Waiting by Kipler

I'm not sure if this Waybacked link will work. If not then you'll have to head over to where it's posted on Gossamer to read it. You know the drill, just c/p the url into a new window.

This is one of my favorite Tesla stories. Yeah, like Kel, she should probably have her own tag here. [livejournal.com profile] tesla321 claims it doesn't have a plot but I beg to differ. Why, heck. It even has an X-File. No spoilers, set during an unspecified early season. Rated "R." It's funny. It's short. It's sexy. It's even, dare I say it, rather romantic.

EXTRA BONUS FIC: In 2010, Tesla wrote a short season one Profiler! Mulder story for me for my Help Haiti donation. Unless you are on her flist, I am positive you haven't read it because she posted it in bits and pieces in her journal, where you can read it if you want to hunt it down. I recently archived it at Fugues. Gen, with hints of UST.

First, thank you to [livejournal.com profile] amyhit for posting a story and moderating discussion in my absence. She noticed that nothing had been posted for...quite some time, pm'd me and came to my rescue. If there is anyone else out there who wishes to post their own recs, rather than have me do it, please let me know. I am the moderator, but this is our community. As always, the nomination post is awaiting your suggestions.

No discussion of fanfiction set during the early seasons is complete without "Universal Invariants." Yes, you've all heard of the story and most of you have probably read it, too. If you are like me, you've read it more than once, especially Chapter 12. *cough*. In "Universal Invariants," [livejournal.com profile] syntax6 takes the canon from season one and early season two, adds an au twist, throws in a tasty casefile, mixes in plenty of UST, Mulder/Scully banter and some angsty relationship stuff, and presents us with a fanfiction classic.

In this story, the twist is this: what if Ethan's scene hadn't been cut out of the pilot and Scully had been allowed to have a life of her own, apart from Mulder and the X-files? How would the storyline have been changed? How would it have stayed the same? This story is long and engrossing, so give yourself plenty of time. If you haven't already done so, don't forget to send the writer feedback!

Read "Universal Invariants".

The party's over. Yes, this week we are taking a break from our first-time Mulder/Scully madness, changing course to read a PG-13 casefile. "Wing and Prayer" was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] hyperladder, seconded by [livejournal.com profile] lightlack and thirded by [livejournal.com profile] amyhit, who is right, by the way, this isn't exactly genfic. This is seventh season MSR, with [livejournal.com profile] revely portraying their relationship in a way that feels very close to canon even to me.

The nomination post is always open for business. Send feedback, then come back for discussion.

Read "Wing and Prayer".

I was thinking about posting something long and depressing, but happily, I thought better of it. I shouldn't take too much credit though since [livejournal.com profile] estella_c gave me the out by suggesting this charming story by Gina Rain. Technically, there's a casefile/xfile that has Mulder and Scully out looking for red, white and blue lights in the sky, but really the story's raison d'ĂȘtre is Mulder/Scully first-time fluff. (Please note your long-suffering moderator's Noromo Icon of Extreme Skepticism and Amazement concerning the likelihood of such an occurrence.)

Happy Fourth of July Weekend to those who enjoyed one! Happy Back-to-Work Monday (or, uh, Tuesday depending on your time zone, oh-people-from-the-future) to everyone else! Link is to the 2004 Spooky site, or you can read the story as a txt. file at Gossamer. Tell us what you thought of the story, and leave suggestions for next time in the usual place.

Bonus Question: what is your favorite Mulder/Scully first-time story?

There is still plenty left to say about "To Carthage Then I Came", and "Ceremony", too, for that matter.

First, I have a confession to make. I love stories with amnesia as a plot element. You could even call it a kink, I love them that much. No, I have no idea why this issue carries such a charge for me. Looking over the list of stories we've discussed here, there have been a disproportionate number with amnesia at the center of the storyline.

That's one of the reasons I dithered for so long about whether or not to post this here. For another thing, it is the second part of an unfinished WIP, which I suspect will never be completed, although never say never with XF fanfiction writers. But I think the second section, "Dreamcatcher," can be read as a standalone, especially if you start with the epilogue to "Tabula Rasa." After that, if you liked "Dreamcatcher," you might end up reading the entirety of "Tabula Rasa." I did. I read the sequel "Footsteps of Angels," too, until she stopped updating it in 2007. Yeah, it's totally a kink.

"Dreamcatcher" is also a variation of the Profiler!Mulder genre, except this Mulder isn't exactly our Mulder. Scully is definitely our Scully; of course, you'll have to make your own mind about that. The timeframe is "the present, but without the baggage of any episodes past Je Souhaite. They're still with the Bureau, Mulder does not have a fatal brain disease and Scully has no interest in artificial insemination. I live in denial. *g*" Me, too. So, 2003. AU.

Anyway, I will be the first to admit that these are not perfect stories, plus there is that unsolved mystery lurking in the background. I love unsolved mysteries, though. Maybe you do, too. Good, bad, or indifferent, I'd love to know what you think of "Dreamcatcher." The links are to the 2004 Spooky site, and to her website, since for some reason, this story never made it to Gossamer. Suggestions for next time can be made at the nomination post.

Epilogue to "Tabula Rasa," which she suggests be read before tackling "Dreamcatcher."

"Dreamcatcher" at Spookys 2004.

"Dreamcatcher" in textfile format at dtg's site. There is a prettier html version but the links go wonky after chapter 11, and though you can get to the rest, it's a hassle.

Have fun.

"This House is Burning" is flat-out the best Profiler!Mulder series I've ever read. Tesla's writing style flows effortlessly, and is, by turns, unobtrusive and lyrical. Her Mulder is both much more competent at his job and much less crazy than he's often written. Frankly, that's a pleasant change. But the trilogy is more than a series of meticulously constructed police procedurals, it's also a believable, emotionally involving, Mulder/Scully romance. So let's see: great writing? Check. Exciting plot? Check. Scorching hot sex scenes? Check, check, check. This story was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] estella_c, and seconded by yours truly.

[livejournal.com profile] tesla321 is still on Live Journal, but unless I've missed something through my inconsistent lurking, she's not actively writing. Could I be more wrong? She's still writing and has even posted a challenge at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_charity.

As far as I know, her email address is still current, so go send her some feedback. Or leave it at her Live Journal. Then go donate some money to the Haitian relief effort and get her to write us some fic.

If you don't like my choices, you can always go suggest some of your own.

Yep, this is the one with the talking parrot, a pretty good casefile, and Scully having "Mulder Awareness Days." The author refers to the latter as Uber-UST in her summary. I think the term "parrotfic," not to be confused with [livejournal.com profile] parrotfic, might have originated here. "I mean why read babyfic when you can read parrotfic, right?" Truer words were never spoken, er, written, Autumn. There is a talking parrot in a Syntax6 story that I bet is a little shout-out to "Gutless." At least, I think it is a parrot.

If you don't find this to your taste, try "Bonemeal," which is a very different kind of story. You can find it on her author's page at Gossamer, along with "Gutless" broken into smaller bites. "Bonemeal" deserves its own discussion, but it's so short, I doubt we'll ever do it formally. If anyone knows if this writer changed fandoms, has a different email address, and is perchance still around somewhere, please let us know. Thanks to an anonymouse, you can go leave Magdeleine comments on her story at Archive of Our Own. You can read her fic for The Office there, too.

This story was suggested by [livejournal.com profile] amyhit as being one that would generate discussion. I guess it's time to read it and find out.

Back when I was still having a normal life, I took on a number of Geocities-related projects. One is to recreate The Spooky Awards Archive, complete with working links, but minus the hideous graphics. Even before the demise of Geocities, the links had all gone dead on the old site. I did finish 1995 and put it up at Dreamwidth. Now that I am back working on that project, I thought it might be fun to read some of the stories that won awards back in the day. Believe it or not, some of them still hold up very well.

"Genius" is vintage Kipler, well-written, with believable season two-three Mulder/Scully interaction. It's genfic, which was more common then than now, or so I've heard, but in any case seems perfectly appropriate to me for the time period. The story is a case file/x-file, told from Scully's POV, involving a child abduction. Since it's not been that long since her own abduction, I think it's fair to say that Scully is a little creeped-out by this investigation. We all know how Mulder is with child abduction cases.

"Genius" won the 1995 Second Place award for "Most Carteresque," which I suppose is short-hand for the story that most resembles the show itself. Since I liked the show best back in the first few seasons, I was eager to see what a fine fanfiction writer could come up with that could fit seamlessly into the series canon. Kipler does not disappoint.

Kipler's old site went down when AOL Hometown closed, so the link is to her site, way-backed.

Happy New Year! We are officially back to the Nominations queue. This story was suggested by [livejournal.com profile] amyhit, who described it "having a very distinctive style that would make for interesting discussion." That sounds good to me. Ooh, and it's a case file.

Title: Timeless
Author: Penelopody
Keywords: MSR, casefile, angst
Author's Summary: It's raining on a beach in Cape Cod, where Scully stumbles upon a woman who's involved in a case file that has deeply affected Scully's relationship with Mulder. I'd describe the story as a philosophical romantic mystery. But maybe it's not.

Timeless.

Let the author know what you think, then please come back and tell us, too. You may leave suggestions for next time at the nomination post.

Yes. I know, I am bypassing the queue again. I need humor, friends, and there is no humor to be found in the queue, just depressing and even more depressing story recs. It has been a long time since I've read this, but I remember it as being a very clever x-file, written by two premier writers from our fandom. And, if memory serves, it is quite funny, too.

Title: "Malus Genius, vel Hoc Lemma Nequiquam Latine Scribitur" (The Evil Spirit, or This Title Is Written In Latin for No Reason)
Category: X, R, A, H
Rating: mostly R (sexual situations, mature language, and implied violence), but there are a couple of NC-17 sections.
Spoilers: Brief episode references late in the story; no major spoilers. This is a stand-alone, with the typical stand-alone disregard for the mytharc.
Keywords: Mulder/Scully romance
Summary: What's *your* evil spirit?

Malus Genius

As usual, give love to the writers, let us know what you think and leave suggestions for next time. I swear, I will get back to them, eventually.

I would like to express my gratitude to the members of this community who carried on and discussed "Iolokus" so brilliantly in my absence. You guys are the best. What? You didn't even notice I was gone? Even better.

Because I am in need of comfort fic, I am by-passing the queue for the moment, in order to post a story I reread any time I am feeling low. I think everyone who loves to read has stories or books or fan fiction that they turn to in times of crisis, for escape or to just to make them smile. This one does all of that, and more. Any story that can make me laugh and cry and creates genuine suspense about the case file and the romance is a classic, in my view. I remember how disappointed I was when [livejournal.com profile] emily_shore recced this fic at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. "No," I wailed. "That's my favorite story! I want to get to rec it." So now I have.

Summary: When an investigation in the middle of nowhere opens old wounds, 2000 miles away becomes too close to home. Can Mulder and Scully unravel the puzzle before they fall apart?

This week's story, suggested by "Tiger Janet," is another long case file. It's not my favorite of Tesla's but it certainly is a good read: sexy as hell, exciting, and, like all of her work, very well-crafted. If for some reason, her site goes down or the links stop working, this story is available on her author's page at Gossamer. This fic is NC-17 for graphic sex, extreme violence, and bad language, so it is neither for minors nor the faint of heart. If anyone has concerns about possible triggers, PM me with your concerns and I'll let you know if this fic might best be avoided.

It has been suggested that perhaps we need a break from angst, so the planned Tesla three-parter has been postponed that we may clear our heads. We can tackle it next week. This week I bring you Pasta!fic. The author says it's babyfic written to sounds of the Breeders' "Last Splash." I have no idea what that means but if [livejournal.com profile] estella_c thinks it's worth reading, that's good enough for me.

"Al Dente"

That link is "reocitied" now; if it goes down, let me know. Or you can find it at Gossamer.

Read, give feedback to the author, encourage her to move her site, give us suggestions for next time. Did I leave anything out? Oh, that's right. Was it good for you, too?

If you just have to have something else to read, try "Kinesthesia". It, of course, is not on her author's page, it's misfiled under Amy, her real name (or is that another fandom name?). Whatever. Gossamer works well until it just doesn't. It's a casefile, NC-17. Yes, of course, I'd like to know how you liked that one, too. Enjoy!

This week's story, "Blood Oranges" was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] dbkate. As per the recent fandom discussions on trigger warnings, I am posting one here, along with the author's header from the story. Discussion of the story is likely to include the same triggers, so let's be careful out there.

Rating: NC-17; minors please read elsewhere
Classification: SRA, and W, for whodunnit
Warning: (skip) Contains discussion of suicide and self-harm.
Summary: The latest victim in a series of brutal murders has a surprising connection to Mulder, but it's Scully who has the connection to the killer. Their relationship might not survive either one.

As always, give the author some feedback, then come back to discuss the story. Your suggestions for next time can be left here.

Ever wonder what happened between the silence of Never Again and the flowers from Memento Mori? Ever wonder if Scully's night with Ed Jerse affected her relationship with Mulder in any way? Ever wonder what pushed Scully to go to the hospital and find out about her cancer in the first place? Ever wonder how her illness might have affected her work or if she ever thought about Leonard Betts' words?

Well, we did...

So did I. I love it when fanfic writers try to fill in some of the blanks the writers of our beloved yet flawed series left behind. Nominated by [livejournal.com profile] idella, this fast-moving case file addresses those very questions.

You are correct. This is a re-post of "Theory and Practice." I was so disappointed that no one commented on this story that I deleted the May 7 entry. I have to try to do a better job of selling this story to you all (clearly, I did a crappy job the first time around) because this story deserves to be read and discussed.

I am also posting to let you know that this community is most likely going on hiatus until the middle of June. I am leaving for New York in a little over a week and am considering going cold turkey on internet access. No, seriously.

Okay, back to our fanfic rerun.

Set between Demons and Gethsemane at the height of the cancer arc, it is as much about the emotional impact that Scully's illness is having on their relationship, as it is about the case file itself. Nascent's theory about that impact is unique, but it seems far more consistent with the canon characterizations than many of the stories set during the time frame. While it is not a romance in any conventional sense of the word, let me reassure you, this is a love story.

"Theory and Practice" could have been filmed as written, except for the sex scenes, of course. If it had been, it would have been a damn memorable episode. The dialogue is snappy: Mulder sounds like Mulder, Scully sounds like Scully, the original characters sound like real people. Their discussions of the case sound like they could have been lifted from the show. The x-file is truly creepy, and the relationship stuff is interwoven into the plot very deftly. This fic is not as long as you think, which I discovered when I printed it out to read. There is another story, also very good, that is attached to the file. It is called "Insider Trading." You should read it, too. Krycek plays a major role in that one, and so does Skinner.

What follows is an section from the first chapter, which I am hoping it will suck you all in, since the beginning of the fic didn't do it for you.
