Moving into the third week of our (unofficial, unplanned) smut-a-thon, we have With a Vengeance by Rachel Lee Arlington.

What can I say about this fic? It was written post Gethsemane and was set in the middle of S5, meaning it has a speculative, somewhat alternative take on how the cancer arc was to conclude. It's about the emotional fallout of the cancer arc, and the way Mulder and Scully deal with crisis, and with each other. It's also a prime example of angry, hot blooded, fight sex.

I don't want to bias anyone before they've even read the fic, but I'm not comfortable posting this one without a brief caveat: this is a fic I'm very ambivalent about. In the past I've been tempted to suggest it, but have always been too uncomfortable. Fortunately [livejournal.com profile] estella_c is above such squeamishness, and suggested it on the premise that it may make for interesting discussion. Just bear in mind that when I say this fic involves fight sex, I mean fight. sex.

Curious yet?

With a Vengeance

And as always, head on over this way if you have any fanfic recommendations for us.

This might be a little over the word limit but I remember it being worth it. Writing talent makes all the difference. Oh yeah, this is substituting for "The Right to Remain Silent" because we already read it here back in 2008. Feel free to go read it again. It's good, too.

DISTRIBUTION/FEEDBACK: aloysia.virgata@yahoo.com. Please ask before archiving.

RATING: NC-17

CLASSIFICATION: Angst, vignette, Scully/Other (But wait! Read my author's notes before you close this. *laugh*) Mod's Note: Author's note is at the site.

SPOILERS: Three Of A Kind

SUMMARY: They share a small laugh, understanding each other and not understanding themselves at all.

DISCLAIMER: They don't belong to me, but I am usually very careful with them. I don't deliberately give them BRAIN CANCER or TAKE THEIR KIDS AWAY like some people I could mention. Ahem.

Along with "The Other Man," Jess Mabe wrote "Beginning" at or near the end of her fic-writing career in 2001, so it's a first season story by an end-of-the-run author. Like "Universal Invariants," it's a story that takes place during canon, but in this case, it's just the second episode, "Deep Throat." At 54K, I'm thinking the story might take longer to read than the episode takes to watch. Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to take a look at her techniques for integrating the story she wants to tell into the story we watched on the TV set.

Spoilers for "Deep Throat," obviously. I'd watch that first, if you haven't already. NC-17 for masturbation. No other warnings that I can remember.

Waving hello to Jess (if she happens to Google herself and clicks the link). Thanks for all the great stories!

Read "Beginning" at one of her pages at Gossamer. (The others are under Jess and Jess Mabe, respectively.)

"Spin" was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] estella_c, who considers it a guilty-pleasure story. Or did she say it was crackfic? Or both? Maybe I'll let you decide for yourselves. From the looks of it, Arlington usually favored Mulder/Krycek and/or Scully/Krycek. I'm not sure what that means except maybe it was more common back in the day (September 1997) for writers in this fandom to ship multiple pairings?

It's NC-17, of course. Author's summary: "Alcohol makes people do the strangest things ..." Yes, this is drunkfic. Although I judge it unlikely, this story could be triggering. As always, if you have any reason to worry, please PM me. Minors turn back now.

I know what some of you are thinking. More first time Mulder/Scully romance? Seriously, is anyone getting sick of these? Judging by the comments, I am assuming not, but maybe I should do a poll? Or you could just yell out in comments? Or a poll? There are a few more waiting in the queue (one of them even has a plot!) but we could skip them in favor of something different.

I could not find a link to this other than at Gossamer, so scroll down until you get to the story. I found it! Waybacked at Millennium Smut. I left up the link to her Gossamer page, too, for the people who will want to check out her other stories: Rachel Lee Arlington.

Keep leaving those suggestions at the nomination post.

We are still talking about "Butterflies All Tied Up." Discussion is being moderated by [livejournal.com profile] amyhit, who bravely agreed to post the story. Please jump in, as I love to be told when I'm wrong. Come on, long-time lurkers, you know you want to.

Throughout our little first time sex scene series, I've continued to puzzle over what makes a sex scene -- sexy -- to me. This story isn't exactly a "guilty pleasure" story, since those mostly involve Mulder/Scully/Krycek and/or paddling (giving a whole new meaning to the term "crackfic"), but I will say I found the sex scene really hot. The first time I read it, I thought I was going into ventricular fibrillation, my heart was beating so rapidly. As always, sexy is in the eye of the beholder, so no guarantees you'll require resuscitation. It's also a great noir mystery story, full of twists and turns.

From the author's note:

Q. So what's this story about, anyway?
A. It's a noir-ish tale where good people may do bad things, bad people may do good things, and sometimes it might not be possible to tell the difference. The lucky ones live to tell about it.
Q. Yeah, but do Mulder and Scully get to have sex and stuff?
A. Yes.
Q. Wait, that was too easy. This sex, do they have it with each other?
A. Totally possible.
Q. When they're not having sex, what are they doing?
A. They're caught up in a murder that cuts very close to home. The investigation reveals truths about each other that they may never have wanted to know.

Read "Bait and Switch", then come back for discussion.

Since all of her stories are not at Gossamer, here is her website: home of the slugslayer.

Never fear, someday I will resume recs from the nomination post, so keep them coming.

When [livejournal.com profile] wendelah1 posted The Leap, she said that clearly everyone had at least one guilty pleasure story. Butterflies All Tied Up is one of mine.

Seeing as we're on this first-time smut kick - which Butterflies rather dramatically is - I recently added it to the nomination page. Wendelah asked if I would be interested in posting it, and I said sure. Since then I've been a little reticent about actually doing so. Despite its popularity back in the day, this isn't a fic I feel I can rec without simultaneously acknowledging its very strong "WTF?" factor. Indeed, the sheer amount of tropiness, as well as the somewhat unusual attitude with which the tropes are used, is likely to be what either delights readers or repels them. It's also what made me rec Butterflies to begin with - because whatever your opinion about this fic is, there's certainly plenty to talk about. When I mentioned in my journal that I was going to be posting Butterflies, [livejournal.com profile] amalnahurriyeh came up with a description of the fic which I have her permission to use here. I'd say it not only covers all the basics of the fic, but does so in a way that communicates Butterflies' over all peculiarity:

I don't think Butterflies All Tied Up can be given any context. You just need to jump right the fuck in. I guess one could say it's third-party-pov, mulderangst/scullytorture(?), first-time-fic? Um? Except crack? Unclear how much of the crack value was intentional? IDEK.

ETA: I FORGOT TO MENTION IT WAS SONGFIC. Intentional-crack songfic, though.

Just, you know. Go read it. It'll be worth it. Mwahhahahaha.

Read Butterflies All Tied Up.

Bugs also has a rather pretty website.

And of course the nomination post is always open.

Greetings, fellow porn fic readers! Though not read or recced much anymore, "Going Once" is a sexy, entertaining, first-time story. In addition, as best as I can tell, it is free of anything, including a plot, that might interfere with the reader's enjoyment of the sex. It is also short. One thing I don't think I've mentioned before (or maybe I have? I do miss my brain) is my dislike for lengthy descriptions of the sex act, especially if written in language that is better suited to lyric poetry than porn. Everyone's porn kinks are different though, so that's not a judgment, except perhaps on my taste. By the way, it is totally fine to keep telling me that I'm wrong. Discussion is good! Only silence is bad! Lurking is encouraged, however. We love lurkers, too.

Well, if there is one thing our enthusiastic discussion of "The Leap" proved, at least to my satisfaction, sexy is very definitely in the eyes of the beholders, so this rec comes with no guarantees. Please do continue to rec sexy/fluffy/angsty first-time stories in the comments or even the nomination post, where I notice there is a bit of a back-log, as I keep ignoring it in favor of reccing whatever the heck I please.

It's good to be the mod. *g*

Read "Going Once."

This is the latest in our informal series of first-time stories. Everyone has at least one guilty pleasure story. Nope. This isn't one of mine. In fact, I resisted reading this for the longest time. Now that I have, I don't know why I waited so long. It's delightful and funny and sexy. It's reasonably "in character." Heck, it even has a plot. I have to admit, I'm not nearly as fond of its sequel, "The Landing," but I understand there are plenty of people out there who like it just fine, too.

I know, I know. You all want to read unhappy first-time sex stories. Party poopers, the lot of you. Well, maybe next week. This week I'm in much too good a mood to spoil it with tales of Mulder/Scully misery. Instead, let's spread the joy.

Read the "The Leap".

I thought it might be fun to read more "first-time" stories. During last week's discussion of "On a Star-Spangled Night," the subject of Mulder's behavior towards Scully came up. One person even called his actions "predatory." Another member commented that she'd rather read depressing sex stories than fluff. I think "A Bitter Taste on the Tongue" fits the bill nicely. This is not my favorite first-time story, but it comes close. It is very hot and very dark, and since Mortimer is such a great writer, for me at least, it was surprisingly convincing.

Warnings: if you think you might need one, pm me, please.

You can read "A Bitter Taste on the Tongue" at Fugues Fiction Archive.

There is still plenty of time to read and comment on the "In Dreams" trilogy.

I first heard of "Ceremony" at the late lamented fictalk, where it was posted for discussion as a one-hit wonder, which it isn't really, since the writer wrote two other fine stories. You can find them at her author's page at Gossamer. As a post-ep for Orison, this story deals with its emotional fall-out in a realistic and moving way. However, what is most memorable to me about "Ceremony" is its depiction of adult sexuality as both carnal and transcendent.

As always, please send feedback to the writer, then let us know what you think. Suggestions for next time can be left at the nomination post.

"This House is Burning" is flat-out the best Profiler!Mulder series I've ever read. Tesla's writing style flows effortlessly, and is, by turns, unobtrusive and lyrical. Her Mulder is both much more competent at his job and much less crazy than he's often written. Frankly, that's a pleasant change. But the trilogy is more than a series of meticulously constructed police procedurals, it's also a believable, emotionally involving, Mulder/Scully romance. So let's see: great writing? Check. Exciting plot? Check. Scorching hot sex scenes? Check, check, check. This story was nominated by [livejournal.com profile] estella_c, and seconded by yours truly.

[livejournal.com profile] tesla321 is still on Live Journal, but unless I've missed something through my inconsistent lurking, she's not actively writing. Could I be more wrong? She's still writing and has even posted a challenge at [livejournal.com profile] fandom_charity.

As far as I know, her email address is still current, so go send her some feedback. Or leave it at her Live Journal. Then go donate some money to the Haitian relief effort and get her to write us some fic.

If you don't like my choices, you can always go suggest some of your own.

"Melancholia" is one of the most unabashedly Romantic stories ever written in this fandom. It seems like it shouldn't work: an old, abandoned house, a graveyard in the rain, Mulder reading Marvell and Shelly and weaving a wreath of flowers for Scully's hair. Her Mulder is mercurial and Byronic, her Scully more earthbound. It's a love story for the ages.

Or is it?

Suggested by [livejournal.com profile] estella_c, seconded by me.

By all means, send the author feedback, and then let us know what you think. Suggestions for next time can be made at our nomination post. There is still plenty of time to read and comment on last week's Gutless", too.

I've been saving, nay, I've been hoarding this nomination by [livejournal.com profile] ktds. Funny stories are rare enough in The X-Files fandom, funny stories that make me snort tea through my nose are rarer still. From the sexy, funny opening scene to the exciting, funny conclusion, Kel's writing just grabs me and never lets go.

Dana Scully and Fox Mulder. Fated to be together, but blind to
their destiny.

What did it take for this clueless duo to tumble at last into
one another's arms? A broken air conditioner and an ice cube?
A dose of ephedrine? A blizzard? Any of these would have
sufficed. One day it happened. They became lovers.

These uncompromising idealists, totally committed to their work,
decided there was room in their lives for joy as well as anguish,
for comfort as well as pain.

And then what? How would the earliest days of this romance be
anything but bizarre, awkward... maybe even funny?

I enjoy many different styles and genres, but no one has provided me with as much consistent reading pleasure as Kel.

Do send feedback to the author. I'm still hoping she'll write us something new (hint, hint). Then you can let us know what you thought of "Recycled Virgins." I intended to post this entry yesterday but Live Journal went down for "scheduled maintenance," just as I was signing back on. I love this story, but I hesitated to post it, because of the length. Most people will not comment on a long story and this one is over 300K, although it moves fast enough that it doesn't feel that long.

This was nominated by a lurker, "Tiger Janet," who has not actually been seen in these parts for awhile. If you are still out there, say hi, dear. But I know two other members/friends who have read it and liked it, for different reasons. Though he doesn't show up for a few sections, Alex Krycek is a major player in "Above Rubies." While he is just as dangerous and sexy as he is on the show, he has also been made into a real, three-dimensional character, with a back-story and everything. There is also a great police-procedural happening and some very hot romance. Scully is kick-ass, smart and sexy, Mulder is adorable, and getting into trouble ever minute. Yeah, he is smart and sexy, too. Honestly, this story has something to please nearly everyone, assuming you like long, very plotty, well-written MSR.

ABOVE RUBIES
CLASSIFICATION: XRA (X-File, Romance, Angst)
RATING/CONTENT WARNING: NC-17 for sex, violence, other disturbing stuff. Please don't read if you're underage. Very violent imagery, though not any worse than the show's.
SUMMARY: Biological weapons, ghosts, sex, guns, bad guys galore, Mulder, Scully, Skinner, and a partridge in a pear tree.
KEYWORDS: MSR, mythology
SPOILER WARNING: U.S. Season 5.

The link is to her site. Please give feedback to the author, then come back and tell us what you think. Leave nominations for next time here.

One hundred stories is a milestone. Thank you for reading, for the excellent commentary on the stories, and for supporting this community.

I'm bypassing the queue again, and I don't even have the excuse of a funny story. I chose this for personal reasons.

Following Teena Mulder's death by suicide, Mulder and Scully travel to his childhood home on Martha's Vineyard, bringing his mother's ashes. Despite its unhappy premise, I found it beautifully written, and to my surprise, ultimately a very healing story to read.

"Aquinnah"

If you prefer a Christmas story, you could try Anjou's "The Ghosts of Christmas Present," her sequel to "Ghosts."

Yes. I know, I am bypassing the queue again. I need humor, friends, and there is no humor to be found in the queue, just depressing and even more depressing story recs. It has been a long time since I've read this, but I remember it as being a very clever x-file, written by two premier writers from our fandom. And, if memory serves, it is quite funny, too.

Title: "Malus Genius, vel Hoc Lemma Nequiquam Latine Scribitur" (The Evil Spirit, or This Title Is Written In Latin for No Reason)
Category: X, R, A, H
Rating: mostly R (sexual situations, mature language, and implied violence), but there are a couple of NC-17 sections.
Spoilers: Brief episode references late in the story; no major spoilers. This is a stand-alone, with the typical stand-alone disregard for the mytharc.
Keywords: Mulder/Scully romance
Summary: What's *your* evil spirit?

Malus Genius

As usual, give love to the writers, let us know what you think and leave suggestions for next time. I swear, I will get back to them, eventually.

A few days ago, someone was talking about fic and the phrase "most famous fic in our fandom" came up. I'm not sure what story she had in mind but surely "Iolokus" has to be a contender for that title. I have seen it nominated by many people for the best fan fiction novel, not just in our own, but in any fandom. I have also seen people say they couldn't finish it because Mulder and Scully were too "out of character."

The misspelled monster that started it all. Although I'm told it promotes heteronormativity in the end, we were more going for polymorphic perversity; you'll have to judge for yourself.

Summary: Painted across the barren and desolate reaches of Texas, the shadows of the Project put additional pressure on Scully and Mulder's already fragile relationship. After a hostage crisis raises more questions about the Project's breeding program, Scully begins her own investigation, leaving Mulder to choose between saving her and saving himself. Finally, the investigation leads to tragedy and Mulder and Scully find that more questions have been asked than answered.

The title reference was to an island mentioned in Medea, to which we turned for fairly obvious reasons.

Warnings: extreme violence, including the death of children.

There are four long sections to this behemoth. My first time through this fic I hadn't much knowledge of canon, so I am curious to see what I think of it now. Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] sangria_lila for this excellent nomination. If there is enthusiasm to continue, I suppose we can forge through to the end or just quit with book one. It's your call.

Please leave feedback for the authors and then come back and let us know what you think. Nominations for next time are made here. This week's story, suggested by "Tiger Janet," is another long case file. It's not my favorite of Tesla's but it certainly is a good read: sexy as hell, exciting, and, like all of her work, very well-crafted. If for some reason, her site goes down or the links stop working, this story is available on her author's page at Gossamer. This fic is NC-17 for graphic sex, extreme violence, and bad language, so it is neither for minors nor the faint of heart. If anyone has concerns about possible triggers, PM me with your concerns and I'll let you know if this fic might best be avoided.

It has been suggested that perhaps we need a break from angst, so the planned Tesla three-parter has been postponed that we may clear our heads. We can tackle it next week. This week I bring you Pasta!fic. The author says it's babyfic written to sounds of the Breeders' "Last Splash." I have no idea what that means but if [livejournal.com profile] estella_c thinks it's worth reading, that's good enough for me.

"Al Dente"

That link is "reocitied" now; if it goes down, let me know. Or you can find it at Gossamer.

Read, give feedback to the author, encourage her to move her site, give us suggestions for next time. Did I leave anything out? Oh, that's right. Was it good for you, too?

If you just have to have something else to read, try "Kinesthesia". It, of course, is not on her author's page, it's misfiled under Amy, her real name (or is that another fandom name?). Whatever. Gossamer works well until it just doesn't. It's a casefile, NC-17. Yes, of course, I'd like to know how you liked that one, too. Enjoy!
